Pacific Kwila - also known as Merbau, Indonesian Teak, Pacific Teak, Afzelia, and Borneo Teak, is a resinous tropical hardwood principally forested in Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon islands of the South Pacific. It is regarded as one of the most durable timbers in the world and has been used for many generations in boat building, flooring, external decking, marine jetties and even salt water jetty stumps. Kwila is a straight-grained wood with a dark brown colour similar to walnut. Kwila has a hardness factor of 8.6 making it one of the strongest and most durable outdoor timbers in the world. The high oil content of Kwila wood makes it weather resistant and pest resistant while its high density and hardness make it perfect for garden furniture. Kwila seasons well with kiln drying, with little degrade and very little shrinkage. Kwila timber has a natural oil content that further enhances its durability. Products made from Kwila timber can be left out in the weather permanently. All of our Kwila furniture is manufactured from timber sourced in strictly managed forest areas in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia under guidelines of the International Tropical Timber Organisation All furniture is kiln dried which prevents warpage when furniture is left outdoors.
